Hi Sam,
As already mentioned in the links mentioned by you, you can achieve it using the Change stage smart shape to transition from Alternate stage to Primary stage in the Case life cycle.
Does this not meet your need?

It just takes you from one stage to another.
You are not able to change from the Alternate stage to the Primary stage because the Primary stage would have been marked as completed as soon as you leave from the stage. In the given scenario, we are trying to enter into a stage that is already completed. Hence a special configuration is required in Pega to enable a stage (Process in a stage) to be performed again.
