Word Merge Without Using ActiveX, Silverlight, or Running an Instance of Word
Hello,
Does Pega offer anyway to generate Word documents without having to use ActiveX, Silverlight, and/or running an instance of Word? I know this is achievable using Open XML, but was hoping Pega had already come up with solutions to take advantage of this very powerful functionality Microsoft has provided by switching to the Office Open XML format.
I've seen similar questions asked on several occasions in the PDN, but have yet to find a thread with a clear answer.

As Eric suggested you can look at the way application profile document is generated. Since 7.1.8 Application profile is generated using DOCX4J.
DOCX4J is similar to Microsoft's Open XML that you mentioned. However this is still internally used and not yet exposed as APIs usage.

I was able to find one post that gives a better answer:

It indicates the plan is to eventually switch over to an HTML5 solution. I have a couple questions about that.
1. What is the timeframe for the HTML 5 solution being implemented and released?
2. If we move forward with utilizing the current Word Merge features that are dependent on Silverlight, will we be able to seamlessly migrate over to the HTML 5 solution without the need for rework?

You may want to trace the application profiler and the document-application tool, as they both generate msword documents, and see if the way in which they generate the document is of use to you.

Thank you rawap and Eric. Those were both helpful answers. That is the first time I've seen DOCX4J mentioned by name, so thank you for providing that detail.
We're looking for a solution that will also allow the document to be generated and attached/link to the case without need for operator interaction. Is that possible using this solution? The way the application profile document generation works it appears as though the operator has to manually open the document and save it.

With Microsoft Silverlight mainstream support end date of 10/12/2021, I am also requesting Pega provide a direct replacement of the word merge feature using only HTML5. Thanks.
