Word Merge without Silverlight

Current implementation of the Word Merge capability requires Silverlight. Is there a way to use this Functionality without Silverlight?

Any alternatives?

If you check the below link, it is mentioned that configuring the browser with Microsoft Silver Light is one of the pre-requisite so i am afraid it is mandatory:
