How to enable/disable display of throbber

I have to display throbber while loading data from a webservice which would usually take a couple of seconds.

How do i do that?

Any OOTB implementations that you can point?

It would have been if we had an OOTB way to display and disable the display of throbber.

For some reason It still doesn't work for me.. Working with JS is really tough :(
