Work Search Gadget search results not showing in portal

We created two portals. 

1) The gadget utilized in the portal created in the Data-Portal class works. 

2) The gadget utilized in the portal created in a custom class does not show any results. On the the clipboard the results page is present and the property pyWorkIDSearchHandle contains the WO ID or true depending on the value entered to search on.  However the portal is not refreshed with any results.
