What is difference between PEGA deployed on Tomcat versus other application servers.
Hello Pega Team,
We are considering to upgrade from Pega 6.2 to Pega 7.2 using open source technologies and the only possible option seems to be using
Apached Tomcat as App server and PostgreSQL as the DBserver. I didnot find any other open source options supported by PEGA.
In this regards, could you help understand the differences between PEGA deployed on Tomcat versus other application servers.
Does PEGA on Tomcat support all listeners, connectors and services similar to other application servers?
How to decide on whether to choose Tomcat or other application servers.

Tomcat will only accept war deployment only. The link below explains certain difference between war and ear deployment to other applicatoin server (e.g. Websphere, WebLogic etc)

Hi Pawan,
PRPC can be hosted by the Tomcat servlet container. Tomcat is an open source product of the Jakarta Project, part of the Apache Software Foundation at 
www.apache.org.
If you choose to use Tomcat as your servlet container, install Tomcat before installing PRPC. Alternatively, you can choose to install PRPC as a Web application within a Web application server, such as the IBM WebSphere Application Server or the WebLogic Portal from Oracle.
Conventionally, browser connections to Tomcat-based PRPC servlets use TCP/IP port 8080 or 8081.
Tomcat uses three XML files (web.xml, server.xml, and tomcat-users.xml) to control access to servlets.

Hello Pawan,
Pega on Tomcat supports all listeners, connectors and services .
If you deploy ear file you can add advanced Java EE features like JMS service,EJB services which you can't do it on Tomcat because it supports only war file .

Thanks all for the responses.
Recently, I've observed some articles on the web explaining how Tomcat can support JAVA EE features by using external java library plugins such as Active MQ, OpenEJB, RabbitMQ, etc.. that support features such as JMS, etc. Similarly, there are other libraries that we could plugin to Tomcat to support those features.
Also, I've noticed a TomEE server (JAVA EE version of Tomcat) with in-built support for most JAVA EE features. Wondering why PEGA doesn't provide support TomEE version.
I'm trying to understand if this opensource option using Tomcat and PostgreSQL can solve all those integration problems. If yes, how can we achieve that by explicitly plugging in those libraries into Tomcat. Not sure if anyone tried deploying JMS MQ or JMS MDB using external libs on Tomcat. Any ideas on these would be appreciated.

Hi Pawan,
Tomcat is just a servlet container, not an EJB container nor an application server, so it does not contains any JMS basic support.
However there are other JMS provider (like OpenJMS from within Tomcat, ActiveMQ etc...)
