One note worth mentioning:
when following the directions in that post in newer versions of Pega 7 you will find that the "pxGmailDefault" provider option will use port 587 and STARTTLS security instead of the older configuration with port 465 and SSL Security.

if you still face the issue, you can enable the mail.debug in the server startup scripts and forward us the console log file and pega rules.log file for analysis.
