Support XLSX format in 7.2 to export reports
In the 7.2 version report definitions are only possible to be exported in a XLS format. However, our customer gets the following error message when opening the exported file:
"Excel cannot open the file because the file format or file extension is not valid. Verify that the file has not been corrupted and that the file extension matches the format of the file."
The problem is not present anymore in the 8.1.5 version where the default output is XLSX but upgrading to the new version is not possible at the moment.
Is there a way to change the way how the OOTB report definiton export works to use the XLSX format?
Can you please support us to come up with a solution to provide the needed functionality to the customer?

This issue is not so much an issue with .xls vs. .xlsx. Later releases of Pega exported a "true" Excel file. And we are exporting it as the latest modern extension .xlsx.
The warning dialog is Microsoft's way of telling you that this may not be a true Excel file. And it is correct. Please refer to this SA. While the start of the SA describes a list view, you can ignore that part. The explanation is the same.

So for your client, there is not much you can do about this until your application is upgraded to take advantage of the new architecture. This likely cannot be backported for your release.

Hello,
In 7.3 version, functionality has been modified to export excel in .xlsx format, Prior to 7.3 it is downloaded in .xls format .eature
If not using Report Definition OOTB Export to Excel, use below link to download excel is .xlsx format using @baseclass.MSOGenerateExcelFile activity.
