Pega Clustering question
Can we have two sets of nodes connected to the same pega_rules/pega_data schema but not able to talk to each other? We may have two sets of nodes separated for security reasons.

Your question seems bit confusing .
If you want the two nodes to be separated so why do want to put them in a cluster ?
Could you please elobarate your question briefly .

the use case is as follows a set of nodes that handle internal traffic and a set of nodes that handle external traffic. Both sets of nodes would connect to the same pega rules DB and there is the potential to hand the case off from the external nodes to the internal nodes (meaning the same DB). We're exploring different architectures to meet the requirements and we're trying to understand risks/limitations if any with some of the choices. Let me know if this clarifies things.

Hazelcast is the default clustering topology in Pega .
If you will try to connect all nodes the same DB it will be in single cluster which will talk to each other .
However what’s the internal and external nodes means here ?
All these nodes will be separated in network wise ?

If i understand correctly, this is the requirement.
Assume you have 4 nodes - Node 1 , Node 2, Node 3 and Node 4.
You want to restrict external traffic to login to Node 1 , Node 2.
You want to restrict internal traffic to login to Node 3, Node 4.
Create two load balancer urls - URL1 and URL 2 and configure them accordingly.
URL1 will be shared with external users and URL 2 will be shared with internal users.
