Need clarification on flow

I need clarification on below scenario. Can some one quickly help me to understand this in real time.

There is one flow with 4 assignments and it went to production. After that for some release, last assignment got removed from that flow and it was deployed to PROD but by that time there are few open work items in prod for 1st flow. Then what happen to those work items, will they follow the old flow (4 assignments) or new flow (3 assignments)?. Please guide me on this.

it would take the new flow and if there are any open assignments in the removed assignment ,it will throw flow error .

So this has to be handled in the new flow. I guess time qualified rule would suffice the requirement .

New rule would be process.  To update the flows in production there are 3 possible ways.  Just go through the Upgarding flows in production lesson in the case designer chapter of LSA.
