Lock is getting released as we move case type stages

I have a requirement wherein 

Stage 1:(Case Type say A-)

            Perform Step 1 of Stage 1

            Perform Step 2 of Stage 1 and then move to Stage 1 on B- case type-Lock on A- case type is getting                                                               released here as we move and then perform three steps on B- 

            Return back to perform step 3 for A- but unable to perform as lock has been released on A- and we are unable to commit changes on A- 

and in UI error comes as Process error.

 

Please let me know how to keep the lock for A- case type.

What is the relationship between Case A and Case B? At what point exactly does the lock get released - are you able to share a trace?
