How to interact with an excel file opened by IE
I have a process that starts off by going to a link to download an excel document directly from a sharepoint site. The sharepoint site forces you to open the excel file locally. Is there a way to "hook into" the Excel process that is opened by Internet Explorer?
I know the Excel connector typically works by defining the location of a workbook first, but i cannot find a way to use it on a workbook that hasn't technically been saved or have a local location yet.

This is not possible with the connector currently. You'd need to save it locally. You might be able to work with it using Excel Interop though and that might allow you to save it to be able to use the connector, although I have not tried this method and it looks like some moderate C# to do so.
