Close parent tab from Modal window
I have a requirement to close the parent tab after submitting a modal local action launched from that tab. When I call the Cancel action just after launching the local action in modal, it closes the parent tab once the modal is submitted. but here the issue is the tab also gets closed when Cancel is selected from the modal.
Is there a way we can simply close the modal action without calling the Cancel action or we need some custom javascript to achieve this?

This is expected OOTB behaviour, when user click submit/cancel button in modal dialog then action set next to launch local action will get executed.
To solve this instead of using modal action OOTB buttons, you could introduce your custom button in the modal dialog UI and you could have the needed action set configured for Submit/Cancel buttons respectively...

@Gunasekaran Baskaran Thanks for your reply. Yes, I am aware that it is an expected behavior as it is configured at the source level from where the modal is being launched. But i don't think there is any OOTB actions that we can configure at the button level as well. We may need to go for custom script as we need to execute validation and close the modal when validations are successful.

With some less customization you would be able to achieve this functionality without having any scripts..
In local action submit button action have the below configuration.
Instead of using validation in local action - flow action, have an activity to validate the needed values. Use Property-Set-Message method and set the error message.
After the activity call cancel action-set which should get executed conditionally, if all validation got completed successfully it should get executed, if any validation got failed it should not get trigger.
In cancel button you could just have the close action-set which will just close the modal pop-up.

@Gunasekaran Baskaran This When condition is available when we invoke the action from a button or link. In my case I am launching the modal action from a menu. In menu, the when is not available for Cancel action.

@GunaSekaran_Baskaran Found a solution for the above issue. Hide the default submit button from the modal local action and use a custom Submit button at section level. On click of the submit button execute the following action set in series -
1) Run script - clear dirty popup using Pega OOTB clear dirty popup function.
2) Refresh other section - include the rest of the layout (except the button) in another section and put the section name. While refreshing we can call a DT or activity to perform desired validations on the form and other processing as required.
This new section should include a hidden field which is set through the DT or activity. This field needs to be included as the element needs to be available in the DOM in order to use it in any when rule while triggering an action after.
I was updating the case status to 'In Progress' on successful validation, so I used pyStatusWork as the hidden text in the section.
3) Cancel - put a When condition or expression based on the hidden element. In my case the condition was .pyStatusWork='In Progress'
This Cancel action should close the parent tab as well.
