You can do this by placing the checkbox inside a dynamic layout, and then setting the dynamic layout container style to one that is configured with the required border.
E.g. here I have set a red border using the configuration shown. This example is from 7.2 but should be applicable to 7.1 versions.
In the section I have set the container format of the layout containing the checkbox to "Red border"
This "Red border" is a container format defined in the skin rule, that uses the OOTB error mixin.

"Error" is actually a combination mixin so you can't see it in the left hand list in the screen shot below as the combinations are towards the bottom of the screen.
