Issue
Case links in Insights open differently in Dashboard and Explore Data tabs, causing confusion.
Symptoms and Impact
When viewing an Insight from the Explore Data tab, the list of case objects is displayed correctly.
Clicking on a specific case object via the Case ID value — which is a referenced property value intended to open the case instance — does not open the case within the same tab. No error messages are shown during this interaction.
The issue is isolated to the Explore Data tab only; when the same Insight is accessed via the Dashboards tab and a case object is clicked, it opens correctly in the same tab.
Steps to reproduce
-
Open any Insight, click on a Case ID value in tab.
-
Result: The referenced Case does not open in the same tab as expected.

- The referenced Case opens fine in the new tab when using browser option or when using the tooltip option that appears when hovering over the Case ID value. Only direct navigation within the same tab fails.
-
Open the Insight in Dashboard.
-
Result: The Case opens in the same tab.

Root Cause
The difference in behavior is by design.
Pega Insights are designed with intentional and distinct navigation behaviors depending on the context in which they are accessed:
-
Dashboard Context: When a Case link is clicked from a Dashboard, it opens in a new browser tab. This design preserves the dashboard state and any applied filter criteria, allowing you to return to your dashboard without losing context.
-
Explore Data Context: When a Case link is clicked from the tab, it is designed to open within the same tab as part of the standard in-application navigation flow. This approach aligns with the exploratory nature of this feature and supports seamless navigation within the application.
Solution
Users are encouraged to leverage the browser option if preferred. As of Pega Platform’24.1 the application supports returning to Insights without losing context.
