Issue
Declare Expressions used in Insights (Explore Data) do not display values, although the respective Data Page shows values when run standalone.
Symptoms and Impact
A property calculated by a Declare Expression displays the correct value when its Data Page is run in isolation, but appears blank when the same property is surfaced through an Insight in Explore Data.
Steps to reproduce
- In the header of Pega Infinity Studio, click Create > Decision > Declare Expression.
- In the Target Property field, enter the property that you want to calculate.
- In the Apply to field, enter the class that stores the target property.
- Click Create and open, define the expression logic, and then click Save.
- In the header of Pega Infinity Studio, click Create > Process & Rules > Report Definition.
- Configure the Report Definition to include the Declare Expression property as a column.
- Click Save.
- In the header of Pega Infinity Studio, click Create > Integration & Services > Data Page.
- In the Source section, select Report Definition and enter the Report Definition from step 2.
- Select the Queryable checkbox to make the Data Page available to Insights.
- Click Save.
- Open the Data Page in the clipboard viewer and confirm that the Declare Expression property displays the expected value.
- In your application, navigate to Explore Data.
- Open an existing Insight or create a new one, and then select the Data Page from step 3 as the data source.
- Add the Declare Expression property as a column or dimension. Result: The property column displays no value in the Insight, even though the Data Page returned the correct value in step 3d.
Root Cause
This is a confirmed product limitation. Insights query the database directly. These do not execute the Pega clipboard processing pipeline.
Declare Expressions are clipboard-runtime constructs — they compute values in memory during request processing and are never persisted to the database. Because Insights bypasses that pipeline entirely, the Declare Expression is never triggered and no value is available to display.
Note: This is distinct from the backward/forward chaining behavior that affects Declare Expressions in List View Data Pages generally. In that scenario, enabling the Legacy Expression option with Calculate value: Whenever used may resolve the issue. That workaround does not apply here.
Solution
There is no supported way to make Declare Expressions evaluate within Insights. The recommended alternative depends on the use case.
Local Change
Use the built-in Calculations feature in Insights (Pega Platform '25 and later).
Insights natively support math, date/time, and text calculations that execute within the Insights engine — no clipboard dependency. This is the supported replacement for Declare Expression–derived values in Insights.
Steps to add a calculation to an Insight:
- Go to Explore Data and open the Insight, then click Edit.
- In the Calculations pane, click .
- Enter a Label, select a Function, and configure the parameters.
- Click Submit.
- From the calculation's Actions menu, add it to Groups, Measures, or Dimensions as needed.
- Click Save Insight.
If the required logic cannot be expressed through Insights calculations — for example, dynamic filtering based on operator context such as Work Group or Work Queue membership — consider an alternative data architecture that persists the relevant values to the database, making them available to Insights without relying on clipboard evaluation.
