Issue
When a table is configured using an Embedded List as its data source, the Search icon functionality does not return results. Entering a valid search term causes the table to display zero rows instead of filtering or narrowing down the visible data. No error is shown to the end user.
The same table configuration works correctly when it uses a List View powered by a Data Page, confirming the defect is specific to the Embedded List search execution path.
Symptoms
- The table Search icon returns no results when a search term is entered against an Embedded List-sourced table.
- A server-side NullPointerException is logged at the time of the search in PegaRULES.log, originating from the internal activity pzGetWidgetItemsCount, where resultsPage is null.
- The failure is silent — the UI shows an empty table without any indication of an error.
Steps to Reproduce
- Create an Embedded Data (list of records) field or a Data Reference (list of records) field.
- Add the field to a View.
- In the field configurations, set the "" option to Table
- Under the Columns header, add any of the fields with the following field types as columns to the table:
- Boolean
- Currency
- Date
- Decimal
- Integer
- Percentage
- Time
- Launch the View containing the table.
- Use the Search icon on top of the table to search for a value belonging to any of the columns configured in the above steps. Result: Table displays no content and the message 'No records found’.
- Check server logs — a NullPointerException in pzGetWidgetItemsCount will be visible at the time of the search.
- For comparison, reconfigure the same UI using a List View powered by a Data Page and perform the same search. Result: The non-text content is correctly filtered.
Root Cause
The root cause is a product feature gap: the Embedded List search execution path supports only text-type fields. Columns backed by non-text field types (for example, date, integer, or reference fields) are not searched, causing resultsPage to be null and the NullPointerException to be thrown.
Solution
This issue has been identified as a product limitation that requires a platform enhancement.
Local Change
Use column-level filters instead of the table Search icon when working with Embedded List-sourced tables that contain non-text fields.
Column filters operate independently of the search execution path affected by this issue and correctly narrow results.
If the full search capability across all field types on an Embedded List is required, this remains a feature gap that will be addressed in a future release.
