What is ClassOfWOS
I was looking at the report def pyWorkSearch and noticed a reference to ClassOfWOS.pyObjClasses for the pyObjClass filter. I can guess at how it works but I'm hoping someone can provide a more technical descriptions.

What Platform version is it? Have you check your implementation guide? I can see few details like:
When searching for all work objects, it loops through the page ClassOfWOS, running an
appropriate Report Definition pyWorkSearch (will be discussed later) to retrieve the data
temporarily on clipboard page pySearchResultsWork (which will be used for all iterations).
Then it appends the data via copy into the page property pyWorkResults of the primary

I'm currently using 7.2.2 and planning to upgrade to 8.x in 2021. I'd like to know more about how ClassOfWOS is populated. I agree that the object contains a list of classes that will be used in the generated query. However, when I've run the report directly only one class is included in the SQL.
In the end I'm looking for a simple and efficient way to find all of the open child and grandchild cases of a cover. Each of our child and grandchild cases are stored in separate tables and contains the ID of the top level cover. In all there are about 12 different case types. One option would be to call obj-browse 12 times. That's a brute force approach. Another option would be to have Pega generate a union query to query all/some of the tables all at once. I'm sure that there are other options too.
If you have recommendations please let me know
