What are the steps needed to optimise a page type property?
For optimising a property that is within a page, can we use declare index rules and if yes then do we need index classes as well?

Yes, you want to create a declare index and a new index class.
Please refer the below mentioned article to see how to configure declare index step by step.
Declare Index - its Configuration, Usage & Execution - OneStopPega
Yes, technically it's possible However, you have to join the index table for the report definition. I advise to check the below the post to opimize the properties in the Work table which elimiates table joins for Reporting requirements..

I believe maintaining column mappings could be challenging, particularly in applications involving parent–child case structures. As the complexity increases, sustaining these mappings becomes more difficult.
@Gunasekaran Baskaran Can you please explain why it gets complicated with Parent/Child case structures?
Here are few points:
1) In class mapping -> we want to create the column manually and then map the respective property to the particular column. This is a kind of additional manual work, and it will be bit hard to understand the steps and to maintain.
2) In Parent - Child relation -> You want to do the column mapping for all classes otherwise in report we will get warning/error message.
