Pega Services Monitoring in 8.x

We are on 8.1 Pega Platform . We are developing services on Pega side which would be invoked by external customers . We need to log the request / response details . We are planning to leverage the OOTB feature of service monitoring at the service level (not service package level) . When we enable this , it gives a warning "Service monitoring is enabled and may have an adverse impact on service response times. Service monitoring should be disabled in production scenarios."
Questions:-
1) How is the service logging happens - Synchronously or Asynchronously .
2) If we have proper Archive / Purge mechanism in place , would this warning still hold good ?

Synchronously in current versions of Pega platform. In the longer run, we may embrace the next gen queue management capabilities to offload the monitoring data persistence from the service request.
2) If we have proper Archive / Purge mechanism in place , would this warning still hold good ?

Yes, the warning still holds good. In-house performance tests revealed that DB overhead in persisting request & response data is adding to elapsed time significantly. Hence, only recommended for DEV env / Debugging purposes.
