Does Pega app need to be restarted if DB has been restarted?

Hi,

Greetings. I am on Pega 7.3.1, every night our RDS instance gets shutdown and the next morning they are restarted. When this happens do we need to restart Pega app server? Can some one please suggest if there is a way for app to be recovered? At the moment all the agents are stopped after the db restart and have to manually restart these or restart the app server so that they are started when app is up.

Hi,

When the database server is restarted, sometimes the Tomcat nodes may lose the connection to the database nodes.  Check to make sure that the connection still works, and if it doesn’t, reboot the Tomcat servers.
Try to get to the customer’s application login screen.  If you see the login screen, the system has connected properly to the databases. NOTE:  You do not have to actually log into the application; just getting the login screen proves that the connection is valid.

However, I will put more attention on the reason of the RDS restarts. As the RDS shutdown is not a normal situation.

Thanks Lukasz, the reason rds instance gets shutdown and started is to maintain savings. They do down every night at 19:00 and come back next day on 04:30. I can get to the Pega splash screen but i am having issues with background agents. They are all stopped, and not alive. How do we make the agents alive when this happens? I am on Pega 7.3.1

Hi There,

Please restart the app server every time after you restart the DB.
Connections are bound to get stale and can be risky to use it like that.

Every time app server restarts it again re initiates connection factory.

Thanks Ujjwal, we are doing this at the moment, but wondering how do we do this in production? Or wanted to know if there is any other way for the connections to be healthy after a db restart?

HI There,

There is no standard way to do it. You may try engineering a new way but you have to take care of a lot of things.
