Creating a customized pyGridPaginator?

I have a user story where the business wants only wants the dropdown at the top of a repeating grid, no buttons as those take up too much space. A colleague has already tried setting up a customized parameter to change to a customized layout within pyGridPaginator based on a built in activity but upon refresh the parameter is not set correctly. Thoughts? Thanks for any and all help!

.One of the layouts in the gadget is set to something similar: myParamPage.pyPageMode=='Drop-Down' && pzShowGridPaginator && !pyIsMobile​ Part of the problem we are having is knowing how Pega selects which layout from the gadget when we add it to an action top which is where it needs to go
