Why gateway is required for integration Pega Marketing with sales automation?

I am trying to integration pega marketing with sales automation by following the implementation guide for sales automation. Now in the document it is written that we need gateway for the integration. If I am correct, gateway is not required for mash up post pega 7 release.

Why Gateway is required for this integration?
