Will the shared storage support the applications designed below 7.x versions

We have implemented loadbalancing and our client is also intrested in implementing the Shared storage for complete effect of High Availability. We have few applications that are desinged in the 6.X versions and running in 7. 1.7 versions i,e completely not uplifted. Will the shared storage changes will work based on the product version or will it has any impact for non uplifted applications.

Also What is the ideal way of implementing shared storage ?
