Synchronous vs Asynchronous Usages

Hi,
Every process line we used to connect different components can be made Synchronous or Asynchronous. Though I don't know the exact difference between them usually after click event of a button I habituated to make the process line Asynchronous.

Can anybody explain me the difference and exact usage of both.
