Pega 8.8 Deployment Types

We do have a customer and our customer is going to upgrade Pega from 7.1.7 to 8.7. What if customer wants to upgrade Pega 8.8. Do they have to use Pega Cloud or is it possible to use on-premises? On Pega 8.8 and upper versions.
