We have tired to get some info from pzGridActivePage where it gets count from 

<%int iTotalRecords = Integer.parseInt(tools.getSaveValue("totalRecords"));%>

But we have no pointers as to where this "totalRecords" value is set.

If you are using a report definition to source the repeating grid, then you can make use of pyReportContentPage.

Here the property .pxResultCount contains the list of records that are currently being displayed on screen which gets updated for every filter.

The total records are already calculated behind the scenes and need not be calculated again. The grid count is readily available in the param of the grid "totalRecords". 

Create a value label property and paste this <%=(tools.getParamValue("totalRecords"))%>

You must be able to get the record count, both filtered and unfiltered.
