How to refresh a section in a separate tab (thread) from an action performed in a tab?

I have two tabs- tab A and tab B open on the user portal. On click of a button in Tab B, I am supposed to close the Tab B and this event should refresh an embedded section in Tab A. Both Tab A and Tab B are separate threads. How do I refresh the section?
