How to import data to a Data type using a defined format
I have a requirement in which I am importing an excel sheet to a Data type
One of the columns in the excel sheet has a value stating the name of the person
For e.g. John Peter OR John, Peter
My requirement is after I finish importing the values that get stored in the Data Type must exclude commas and Spaces for e.g. the above values must be stored as JOHNPETER

Have a Declare Trigger in your data table class and select (Trigger when an instance is:) option as Saved and inside declare trigger have your logic to validate and reframe the data as per your business need..
Declare trigger will get invoked whenever deferred save is getting happened on data table entries and your declare trigger activity will invoke the validation and reframe the data as expected...

Is there any other alternative, Should we go for a Declare Trigger which is an expensive call just to format the data?

Depending on how frequent the import happens you can choose to format the data in real-time with declare trigger. If this is idle data not used immediately use a background processing activity to do the formatting and re-saving of every inserted record.- (Savable DataPages)
