Get Records from a table which is present in different schema using Report definition?

i was asked a question from an interview

using report definition how can we retrieve columns of a table that is present in a different database schema

class joins and associations cant help...how can we retrieve data present in different schema apart from current schema

By setting up a reports database, we can retrieve data present in a different database. but that database must have the same structure (tables and columns).
