File Listener on remote FTP/SSH

Can we have File Listener polling on a remote server..? I have a scenario where files get dropped to a remote location and then a cron job picks them up and then bring them to local server where Pega is running. Then a File Listener picks them up and processes them.

It would be great if File Listener can directly pick them up from remote location.

The only option i can see now is that the remote file system has to be mounted and accessible from the local file sysmte for File LIstener to access.  Not sure if there is other way to get around that.
