You actually mentioned the exact use case for this setting :)

Let's assume you call a sub process with multiple end shapes based on different paths process take. Each end shape can be configured with it's own flow result.

Then in Parent flow, in the connector coming out of this sub-process you need to select Condition type as result and there you can use flow result.
