Does DSM (ADM in particular) still need spring framework (as documented in page 26 Core Modules part) for JBoss EAP 6.x in 7.1.8? The default resource adapter for JMS is hornetq for JBoss 6.x.
Here is what documented in page 26 of the document https://docs.pega.com/decision-strategy-manager-installation-guide-718:
At a more specific level, Spring Framework 4.1.4 Adaptive Decision Manager relies on the Spring JMS integration framework. The springjms-4.1.4.RELEASE.jar archive must be part of the installed Spring module.

Both might be required (if you plan to use ADM features) . One is provider while another is like API to access the JMS so you have to understand the distinction here.
Without Spring-JMS framework you cannot access JMS provider in DSM.
I do not know the internal architecture of DSM. But from Page 22 of https://docs-previous.pega.com/decision-strategy-manager-installation-guide-718 it is highly likely JMS is used for generating ADM (Adaptive Data Model). That is probably the reason why the JMS is configured in topic mode and so it listens to particular events and generates ADM model based on those events asynchronously.
Try to see if in DSM if you can really generate ADM model. It is best way to test it. Ping only checks if DSM service is running. It does not create ADM model (otherwise it will get performance issue)

Yes spring module is required. Hornetq is the just like any other JMS provider like ActiveMQ,IBM-MQ. Spring-JMS is the non-J2EE implementation of JMS API so that the application can access any JMS provider be it Hornetq, Active MQ...
Here is how to install Spring-JMS module in JBoss which is unfortunately un-documented in installation guide.

Now copy all the spring related jar artifacts in the "main" directory
Now enable com.sun.rowset module which is also referenced by DSM by creating a directory structure
"com/sun/rowset/main" under /modules folder.

No jar is necessary since this jar is already part of jre. It just needs to be enabled so that JBoss classloader can load it.
For JMX please create a JBoss Management user using add-user.sh script from JBoss /bin directory . Note user type should be Management user.

thanks, to clarify, are both hotnetq (which comes with JBoss) and spring jms framework required for DSM? How do we know if the installation is correct (i.e., how do I trigger use of Spring JMS framework)? I installed DSM without spring framework it appears that the basic stuff (e.g., ping from prpc) does work.
