Auto Append for a dropdown

I want to append property value to a dropdown property. I am using autoappend option available in dropdown in Read only format option in presentation tab. I had given autoappend append value as .OwnerNam where ownernam is property value that need to appended to dropdown property. It is not working. How can I achieve this ?
