Question

Updating from Pega 8.1.1 to 8.1.2
Hi,
We have upgraded our lower environments to Pega 8.1.1 but since 8.1.2 also released, there is a discussion going on if we can update to the latest product so that it becomes more stable with new hot fixes. Is there any quick way to update from pega 8.1.1 to 8.1.2?

Hello Anandh,
Upgrading patch versions, like going from 8.1.1 to 8.1.2, follows the same steps as a standard Pega upgrade. You're correct that you need to upgrade the environment in the same way regardless of whether it's a major (8.x > 9.x), minor (8.1.x > 8.2.x), or patch (8.1.1 > 8.1.2) upgrade. The new patch update system provides the advantage of being able to test everything all at once and together, and there are no new features in patch updates (only bugfixes) so there won't be any breaking changes.

Hi,
Request you to review section "How do I install a patch release?" in https://collaborate.pega.com/discussion/new-platform-patch-release-announcement
This should help you find the way.

It's referring to upgrade guide for 8.1 which does not mention anything specifc about patch release. If I need to upgrade again then it's going to require some downtime. do we have any separate activity for patch releases which would be quick?

Can you please check below link?

Thanks for your reply but it is also referring to upgrade guide whereas in upgrade guide I can't see anything specific mentioned for patch release. Does that mean we need to upgrade the environment regardless of the fact it's a major upgrade or minor one?

Hi Anand,
We have given this feedback to Engineering,.

To add on - we recently published a new article on the Patch application process for on-premises deployments. I'd urge you to take a look and let and adopt the best practices in order to minimize or eliminate disruption of on-premise platform patch upgrades.

Thanks Matt for your response! I think this article corresponds to the process which is written in the upgrade guide and I agree with Adam that there is no specific process for updating to patch release. Becuase Rule schema upgrade occurs out of place but when we upgrade data schema, it occurs in-place and requires downtime. However considering it's a patch release, I am assuming there won't be much impact on the existing process and less functional testing would be required.

you can check

or else you can check the deployment guide as well

Hi Ritam,
Thanks for your reply but this is what we have disucssed before and the link you have mentioned here as already been shared before by other people. As per Adam, I also feel that there is a single process now to Upgrade or Update Pega (regardless of Major or patch release) so if you come accross something which says different other than Upgrade Guide, please feel free to share here.
