Ajax call failed error
When I am trying to expand a tree , I am getting a pop up - Ajax call failed.
Can you please suggest what might the root cause of this issue.

There are no exceptions in logs. This error comes when time out happens and system logs off but the session remains. Therefore , when a user clicks on expand grid ajax error is displayed.

Are you getting any error in pzUpdateExpandStatus activity(in Tracer) ? If yes please provide snapshot of the error.

We have seen this before when the authentication service timeout is not configured properly what authentication are you using, in the past we have seen this when customers used AuthenticationLDAPTimeout instead of LDAPAuthenticationTimeout. It does appear to be a timeout issue as per your last comment.
But if you can trace this then it would provide more information.
