Including metadata with CMIS attachment

If I am storing attachments in a CMIS system via CMIS connector how do I include metadata with the attachment?  I see articles referencing CMIS-UpdateProperties but still don't understand. I assume I need to override some activity to populate maybe the clipboard that is called automatically before the connector is called which would then pass the data through the connector call somehow?
