Execution of pega rules from JCL batch jobs

I was going through one of the old videos of PDC 2013 regarding Pega7 architecture https://pdn.pega.com/pegatube/pdc-pega-7-architecture-depth

and found the last presenter talking about pega rules being embedded in JCL jobs for execution. Can you please let us know how to invoke specific rules with required parameters from external batch jobs. We are aware of import-export, deployment scripts, BIX extract rules but I want to specifically know about invocation of individual rules e.g. an activity from external batch jobs.

One option is to expose any rule through a REST service (which is fairly straightforward) and then you can call the REST service through commands like curl. Check examples of Pega API.
