Is date stored as Text more convenient?

Hi Techies,

While implementing a solution and knowing how much trouble or known issues we have with date or datetime datatype. So regarding the same, I want to know if date properties  stored as text is more convenient or it should be always stored as date or datetime whatever be the situation. Please state the advantages and disadvantages. 

Please help me to answer this.
