Customizing modal dialog in Initialization Stage

Beginning with Pega 8.5, Initialization Stage has been introduced. During Initialization Stage, the series of screens pop up as modal dialog as below.
Question 1: Can someone please tell me what is the background of making Initialization Stage as modal dialog? I am just curious if there are any advantages of this specification from business perspectives?
Question 2: Many customers said the size of modal dialog is narrow. What would be a good solution for that from UI perspectives? Can we easily adjust the width (and height)?
