Are look up function and Report Definition are used for same?

One of our application, we are using @Utilities.lookup function to retrieve the pyusername from PEGADATA.PR_OPERATORS table. Will this impact the performance. Can we use RD for the same? Which one is better?

Lookup is used when we need to use only one instance as a data source.

A report definition is used to get the list of instances.

Lookup is generally used when the expected results are of page type. And report definition works even if expected result type is a page or page list
