Regarding Inheritance

Why does pega support two types of Inheritance(Pattern and Direct). Is n`t it just one inheritance type is enough for re-usability. What is the necessity or circumstance to have two types of Inheritance. Please explain under what scenario we opt for the two different types of inheritance.
