What is the impact of not closing a file created using a connect-file rule?

I have encountered a situation where a file is created by an agent activity using a connect-file rule, with the "keep file open" checkbox selected, but the agent has crashed before reaching the final call to the connect-file rule to close the file. The file seems ok but I am wondering if there are any unseen impacts?
