What are symbolics in a report definition
I have heard of Symbolics being used in a report definition as against params and constants.
What exactly is symbolics?

You can only use the OOTB ones. We have an enhancement request - FDBK-15131 - to provide support for user defined symbolics.

Symbolics refer to strings which represent date time ranges. When used in filter conditions, the RHS of the filter can be a symbolic like "Today", "Yesterday", "Last 7 days" etc. This eases the developer / end user (in report viewer / editor) to provide date ranges which are dynamically computed instead of being done by the developer. In the report definition ruleform, the "Select Values" button in the filter section shows these symbolic values for date and date time properties.

Ex. I would send "Last 7 days" as a parameter (Param.Duration) to the RD and use the same in filter condition
