SSO Authentication without using Authentication Service

Other than "PRCustom" authentication type in web.xml, what authentication types could be used? Without creating Authentication Service rule in PRPC is there a possibility to implement SSO

I guess without using Auth Service we can have basic authentication but for achieving SSO we must configure AuthService as we should  configure the IDP/DS details in connection and metadata information to enable SSO.
