Saying goodbye to Flash in Chrome
We are migrating to Pega 7.31, our release date is the End of September. This morning, I saw this post from google Chrome :
https://www.blog.google/products/chrome/saying-goodbye-flash-chrome/
We recommend Google Chrome for our developers because IE has too much bug and it is slower than Chrome.
What will happen with the referencing rule tool with the google annonce ?
Best Regards

Flash will be completely removed from Chrome toward the end of 2020. Other modern browsers will follow the same approach.
For more details on The Adobe Flash Player deprecation for the end of year 2020 - please read this knowledge base article - https://community.pega.com/knowledgebase/articles/system-administration/adobe-flash-player-deprecation-end-year-2020
Here is the approach for each of the components that have been using the flash technology
1/ Charts
Flash for charts is only used when using list views (LVs) and summary views (SVs) - LVs and SVs have been marked as deprecated in Pega 7.2 and recommendation has been made available to convert the old LVs and SVs to use the Report Definition rule type

- For embedded list views, source a grid by a Report Definition or a Data page if additional processing is required (such as the case of a custom get content activity)
- For Charts, use the auto-generated Chart Control or source the literal “Chart” control by a Report Definition
Report definitions have been updated to use SVG in Pega 6.3 and are no longer using Flash technology.
2/ Referencing rule tool
In Pega 8.4, the old flash-based referencing rule widget is replaced by a new widget used auto-generated UI. There is also a component on Pega Exchange for customers running older Pega Platform releases that will replace the old widget.
The referencing rule component is available on Pega Market place https://community.pega.com/marketplace/components/pega-rule-referencing-tool
It supports Pega 7.3 and higher.
There are 2 different download files: one for Pega 7.3 / 7.4 and one for Pega 8.x
Download the file and import it as a component by following these instructions. https://community.pega.com/sites/default/files/help_v722/sys%20mgmt/components/sm-install-component-tsk.htm
3/ Declarative Network Viewer
In Pega 8.5, the old flash-based Declarative Network Viewer is replaced by a new widget used auto-generated UI.
The Declarative Network Viewer using auto-generated UI is also available on Pega Marketplace and only supports Pega 8.1 and higher https://community.pega.com/marketplace/components/declarative-network-viewer

Is Pega 8 dependent on flash as well?
Also found another pega article listing following dependencies. I am assuming all this will be addressed in the upcoming fix. Is the charts referenced below impact end users as well? can you expand on "few other" charts?
Reference Rules, the Declarative Network Analyzer, and a few other charts accessible from the Designer Studio.

What versions will the Pega exchange component cover? Will it cover all 7.x versions?
Pegasystems Inc.
US
It is too early to tell yet - Testing all 7.x versions will be a significant effort. The current thinking is 7.3 and higher. It will depend on what functionality needs to be used for the auto-generated UI to work.

Hi Richard,
Thank you for the update. I was on the lookout for this for the last few weeks. Do you have insight if I will be able to use the replacement component on Pega v6.1 apps? I still have multiple business processes running on v6.1. Also the same question for v7.3.
Can you tell us if this solution is coming in line with the next Pega Infinity release 8.4 or separately? What is plan for Chart related development which also uses Adobe Flash?
I appreciate your response.

Hi @RichardMarsot,
Do you guys have any idea how to identify UI (sections, flow actions or a harness) using charts sourced by summary or list views in 7.x applications other than looking at each rule individually?
Something similar to "CheckForCustomWarnings" where we can explore the rule contents/configurations and tell if there's anything in there that shouldn't or is not a best practice.
The reason why I ask is because we have 20+ applications sharing a development environment and we need to identify the scenario described above in a proactive way rather than having each application team (which is different for every app) doing this exercise manually.
I know that starting in 7.x versions implementing a chart on an auto generated section sourced by a SV or LV using the chart control is not possible, so the question here is what other ways are there to do such thing in 7.x app?
Could it be an upgraded rule coming from a 6.x environment or perhaps there's a JSP tag/syntax for non-auto generated rules for it, and if so...how do we identify it?
Any thoughts you may have on this would be greatly appreciated.
Best regards,
Elias.

Is there something which works on Pega 7.2?

Hello, My organization is very keen on this alternative to flash. It has already been phased out of our IT systems but is till in use by Pega projects. All our Pega projects are on 7.2.2 version and we do not have an upgrade plan in near future. Could you please let us know if this be available for 7.2.2.
Pegasystems Inc.

The referencing rule widget using auto-generated UI will be available on Pega Exchange for Pega 7.3 and higher. It will not work on Pega 6.x or version lower than Pega 7.3, because it uses some functionality that is not available in these older releases.
Note that the referencing rule widget is a developer only tool - it is not intended to be used on end user portals for production applications. For older version, using search can be used to find the referencing rules. You can also use IE11 which will still continue to support Flash.
The tool should be available early December on Pega Exchange.

Hello - I was wondering if there were any updates on the development of the new tool since we are moving into 2020 now. I was unable to find anything in Exchange. Thank you!

Hello, we are also still running our main Pega application on 7.2.2 and not planning to upgrade until summer 2020. Can you please confirm again officially that no update from Pega will replace the flash version of referencing rules in 7.2.2?
Pegasystems Inc.
US
Yes only 7.3 and higher will be supported.
Chrome will remove Flash support at the "end of 2020" - so likely around October / November 2020 - Other browsers like Firefox, IE11, Edge or Safari have not yet announced a clear deadline. Since the rule referencing tool is a developer only tool, you are not constraint to using Chrome only as the browser to login to dev studio and the developer could use a different browser.

Hello Richard,
So we have few business processes on 7.1 with chrome, IE11 and edge.
And from what I read above user portal will be fine and only developer tool will have an impact which can
be workaround with IE11.
We also have a smart investigate running on 6.3 (IE11,Chrome,Edge), do you see any impact to user portals specially the report graphics
Thank you,

I wanted to confirm if the Rule Referencing Tool will work with 7.1.7 and 7.2? A number of previous posts state that it is 7.3 and above. However, the download link says 7.x
https://community.pega.com/marketplace/components/pega-rule-referencing-tool
Also, is there any additional information on the Declarative Network Viewer and Class Inheritance Viewer? I believe both of these also use Flash.

The referencing rule tool that is using auto-generated UI is available on Pega Marketplace and only supports Pega 7,3 or higher r https://community.pega.com/marketplace/components/pega-rule-referencing-tool . The reason for not supporting a lower version is that it uses the rule compare functionality inside Dev studio to display the slide in panel and this functionality was introduced in 7.3.
You can always use IE11, or an older version of Edge or Chrome if you need to continue running the flash player.

I had a question on this. What about IE versions lower than IE11 says IE10 . Will those be impacted if they are being used. I only see IE 11 and above.
Pegasystems Inc.
US
Microsoft changes only apply to ie11 - https://blogs.windows.com/msedgedev/2020/09/04/update-adobe-flash-end-support/
but Adobe player might also be blocked by Adobe through updates. The number of users running IE10 is very low - these are likely systems running old versions of Windows and have not been upgraded in years. If they continue to not upgrade, there is no reason that the Flash player will stop working.
this doc has all the details - https://community.pega.com/knowledgebase/articles/system-administration/adobe-flash-player-deprecation-end-year-2020

Thanks Richard for all your answers.
So conclusion is PEGA don’t have any work around for lower version? Only upgrade is the way??
