Can pega systems connect to database using APIs ?

What is the response time to fetch a particular data from database using APIs?

How does the response time changes with the volume of data?

For example let's say I want to extract lakhs of rows and thousands of columns from the database real time using APIs and process the data using a pre defined model and use additional real time data in the next base scheme of things . What would be a typical response time would be compared to low volume of data?
