Question Mark appearing in data record after import from Excel

Hi.  I am importing some rows into a Pega data type and a question mark gets mysteriously added in front of my text on one of the fields.   I.E.  xxxx becomes ?xxxx when imported.   Anyone familiar with this issue, suggestions for resolution?
