Is it mandatory to externalize services for Pega8.8 and Pega Infinity'23 while upgrading from Pega8.6.x

The current application is on on-Premise VM based infra and is on version 8.6.1. We are planning to upgrade to 8.8.3 or Infinity'23. We would like to continue using embedded services (Hazlecast, Elastic search, Kafka) and not planning to externalize services. I've found that it is recommended to use externalized services from the documentation but we would like to continue using embedded services. Is it mandatory to externalize these services or can live with embedded services?
