Pega have Soap and Rest features to exchange data between the pega applications .

Coming to case exchange you can create RAP of the application and import it to the other application through directly designer studio or through command line utility .

And from the command line utility you can do lot of stuffs like export ,import ,hotfix installation, indexing ,expose the classes ,run an agent .

The document has taken a framework for an example, though you can refer and understand the aspect of combining multiple Pega application.

For exchanging data or for exposing services to be consumed(Interface like the structure of Java). You can use Service and Connector Wizard.
